About Axé Capoeira
Grupo Axé Capoeira was founded by Mestre Barrão in Recife, Brazil in 1982. Since that time the group has expanded across the globe to become a worldwide leader in Capoeira instruction, music, and more. Currently there are schools in 26 countries with more than 10,000 students spinning and kicking and flipping all over the place.
Grupo Axé Capoeira Kansas City works hard to ensure that Capoeira has a strong future. Through research, travel and participating in events, we hope to increase our knowledge in the art and contribute to the evolution of Capoeira. Our goal is for Capoeira to be placed among the most widely-practiced and respected martial art forms in the world.
Domestically, Axé Capoeira manages locations in eight U.S. cities: Chicago, Phoenix, Tuscon, L.A., Atlanta, Maryland, St. Louis and Kansas City. We welcome you to come join us!
Philosophy
The philosophy of Grupo Axé Capoeira is to respect all Mestres, preserve the roots and traditions of Capoeira, and train Capoeira in all its aspects: as a fight, art, and culture.
We endeavor to teach and educate so that Capoeira will grow in a positive healthy way.
We attempt to pass on to the students physical and mental methods of training so that they learn to create situations and maintain a dialogue within the game. By playing both with friends and enemies, students learn to deal with any situation in or out of the roda.
In North America, we not only teach movements, but the Brazilian language and customs as well, so that the students may become true capoeiristas.
Axé Capoeira Kansas City
Axé Capoeira Kansas City opened its metaphorical doors in 1998 and holds the distinction of being the first chapter of Grupo Axé Capoeira in the United States.
Why “metaphorical,” you ask? Well, our first sessions were hosted outdoors on the historic steps of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
Now after all these years, Axé Capoeira Kansas City has expanded to become the best Capoeira and Brazilian performance group in the Kansas City area. We perform Capoeira and traditional Brazilian dances regularly at ethnic festivals, First Fridays, holiday events, and private parties.
Our classes include something for students of all ages, sizes, and skill levels. We offer children's classes regularly after school for children ages five and up.
Adult beginners are encouraged to attend our beginners Capoeira classes where you will be introduced to Capoeira at a steady but challenging pace. Your legs will hurt. You’ll think you look foolish. Both of these things will actually happen. You need to decide if you have what it takes to get past that and become a part of something special.
Your first class is always free, and there are no contracts to sign.
